SIDP Antimicrobial Stewardship Program
Antibiotic Stewardship is an innovative and intensive practice-based activity for pharmacists that focuses on the pharmacist's role in the area of appropriate use of antimicrobial agents. The program, which emphasizes a health care team approach, seeks to foster the development of a strong knowledgebase in microbiology, pharmacology and disease state management in order to successfully implement an antibiotic stewardship program that will improve patient care, reduce healthcare expenditures and potentially reduce rates of resistance and prolong the longevity of the limited number of antimicrobial agents available to treat infections.

CDC Get Smart About Antibiotics-Tools for Stewardship
SIDP Named a National Strategic Partner for CDC's "2011 Get Smart About Antibiotics Week”
Get Smart About Antibiotics Week is a national campaign designed to highlight the coordinated efforts of CDC, state and local health departments, and non-profit and for-profit partners in an effort to educate people about the importance of using antibiotics wisely in both community and healthcare settings. From November 14-20, CDC and its partners will promote appropriate antibiotic use in inpatient and outpatient settings with a special focus on nursing homes and long-term care facilities. Today, infections with antibiotic-resistant bacteria have become increasingly common on both healthcare and community settings. As such, patients, health care providers, hospital administrators, and policy makers must work together to employ safe and effective strategies for improving antibiotic use. CDC's Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work and Get Smart for Healthcare programs are specifically designed to educate consumers and healthcare providers about appropriate use of antibiotics.

Software Vendors who Support the CDC Antimicrobial Use and Resistance Initiative
The CDCs National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) will re-launch the Antimicrobial Use and Resistance (AUR) Pharmacy Option to electronically collect data on antimicrobial use in April 2011. The following vendors are aware of this new reporting functionality and have expressed interest in providing services and software that will allow participation in the AUR pharmacy module through direct reporting. What follows is a list of vendors and appropriate vendor contacts for information regarding the AUR pharmacy module. Click here for a PDF downloadable list.
This information is provided as a service to SIDP members and registrants of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Certificate Program.
