Carilion Clinic is a six-hospital health system located in Southwest Virginia. The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Infectious Diseases will integrate into a long standing and progressive Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP), including a robust ID Pharmacist team, ID PGY2 pharmacy residents and a collaborative ID Medical Division. Physical time will be shared across two primary locations: Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital (CRMH) and Carilion New River Valley Medical Center (CNRV). The hospitals are located approximately 45 minutes apart, connected by the I-81 corridor.
Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is a 763-bed academic medical center affiliated with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. As an academic facility with a Level 1 trauma center, this tertiary care institution has numerous post-graduate training programs, including multiple medical and surgical residencies and fellowships. Carilion New River Valley Medical Center is a 146-bed acute care hospital that also provides labor and delivery services, as well as inpatient psychiatric services. CNRV is a level 3 trauma center and has been recognized by the Leapfrog group as a top community teaching hospital. Both CRMH and CNRV have pharmacy residency programs.
This position's primary focus will involve antimicrobial stewardship efforts at CNRV and will provide remote audit and feedback stewardship for four additional Carilion community hospitals. The position involves direct patient care responsibilities including: prospective audit/feedback utilizing decision support software, penicillin allergy de-labeling/skin testing, rapid diagnostic blood culture review and antimicrobial stewardship administrative responsibilities. Administrative responsibilities will include leading system initiatives, infectious diseases guideline development, staff education, relevant committee representation, and precepting pharmacy students as well as PGY1 pharmacy residents (CNRV location) and PGY2 infectious diseases pharmacy residents (CRMH location). Collaboration is expected with the ID division at weekly case conference, as well as weekly team meetings with the system ASP team. CDC Core Priority Measures, NHSN antimicrobial usage data tracking, and key performance metric tracking are completed at the system level and would be supported by this role.
Qualified candidates must be a graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and must possess a current Virginia pharmacist license or be eligible for licensure. An ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is required and specialized PGY2 residency training in Infectious Diseases is preferred. Applicants must possess excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills, as well as demonstrate advanced skills in critical thinking and analysis.
