Pharmacists lead innovation in ID and make a huge impact on patient care! #FutureOfIDPharmacy #PharmacistsLeadingChange
Congratulations to the #IDPharmacistsDay “Share Your Story” Contest Grand Prize Winner, Eva Littringer!
Eva Littringer: “For years, my focus was laser-sharp—improving the in-use stability of antibiotics. While important, I came to realize that in the face of rising antimicrobial resistance and limited innovation in the antibiotics field, this narrow approach was not enough to address the broader challenges we face.
Pharmacists are uniquely positioned at the intersection of drug development, delivery, and administration. We understand a molecule’s journey—from its mechanism of action to its pharmacokinetics and the complexities of its development and manufacturing. We have insights into the daily challenges faced by healthcare providers, the constraints of healthcare systems, and, most importantly, the unmet needs of patients.
By connecting these elements, I started my journey of developing a novel IV therapy platform that combines a user-friendly medical device with an in-use mixing concept. This system will enable safe preparation and delivery of IV therapy in both clinical and community settings. The platform is intended to support optimized PK/PD delivery regimens, including prolonged and continuous infusions, independent of in-use stability limitations. This approach will allow for precise dosing and administration, ensuring patients receive the right drug at the right dose and time while also reducing healthcare workload.
Addressing AMR and its complexities requires transformative thinking. As pharmacists, we are not just specialists in one aspect of a drug’s life cycle—we can be architects of solutions that bridge science, systems, and care. By embracing this broader view, we unlock the power to innovate in ways that truly matter."
The “runner up” story was submitted by Aleena Issac.
Aleena Issac (@aleenaissac.bsky.social): “Amala Hospital launched an ASP - not to meet standards, but patient needs. Starting with no ID specialist or EMR, a team of a hematologist, 3 clinical pharmacists, and IT, with management support, built a clinical decision support system and demonstrated how multidisciplinary collaboration drives innovation."
