Data suggests that some antimicrobials may be safely and effectively administered using varying administration methods including IV push, IV piggyback, and IV extended infusion. Pharmacists may be unaware of current outcomes-based literature necessary to effect change in their institutions to maintain safety and efficacy, while considering practical challenges.
Target Audience:
This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of pharmacists (including BCIDP-credentialed) who provide care to patients receiving IV antimicrobials. Attendees will have an opportunity for Q&A at the end of the presentation.
Learning Objectives:
- Compare and contrast pharmacokinetic data and clinical outcomes associated with various methods of IV antimicrobial administration including push and extended infusion.
- Describe available resources that provide guidance on the practical implementation of different methods of IV antimicrobial administration.
- Apply evidence-based recommendations from consensus guidelines to clinical decision-making to enhance patient care.
- Identify practical considerations that influence techniques for IV antimicrobial administration.
