The Healthcare-Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance (HAI/AR) Program within the

Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness (CEDEP) division of the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) is currently seeking a part-time Pharmacist 2 position. This position is currently funded from year to year through CDC cooperative agreements (grants). Some in-state and out of state travel is required.

The Pharmacist 2 position will coordinate TDH’s antibiotic stewardship and appropriate antibiotic use efforts in the outpatient setting, as well as offering support to efforts in other healthcare settings. This will include, but is not limited to, development of an outpatient stewardship toolkit, development of and recruitment for and outpatient provider feedback program, overseeing analysis of outpatient antibiotic use data, and coordinating high-prescriber notification in the outpatient and long-term care settings.

Job duties will include:

  • Promote and support antimicrobial stewardship efforts in the community targeting certain provider groups (e.g., pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists).
  • Develop and update content for outpatient stewardship toolkit, maintaining updated guidelines appropriate antibiotic use for both adult and pediatric populations.
  • Recruit a minimum of five outpatient practices for a provider feedback program and coordinate assessment and implementation of core elements within these settings.
  • Participate in the analysis and interpretation of data on outpatient antimicrobial use (including IQVIA Xponent data, IQVIA Longitudinal Prescription and Claims Databases (LRx/Dx) data, publicly available CMS outpatient antibiotic use data, and available TennCare outpatient antibiotic use data) to better understand how to prioritize interventions (e.g., certain providers/provider groups/ certain geographic locations) within TN.
  • Coordinate efforts to notify high prescribers of antibiotics and long-term care facilities with high rates of antibiotic prescribing as part of TDH’s promotion of US Antibiotic Awareness Week.
  • Manage provider notification of metrics informed by outpatient antibiotic use analysis in select Tennessee counties.
  • Serve on the Antimicrobial Stewardship subcommittee of the multidisciplinary advisory group on HAI and Antimicrobial Resistance.
  • Participate in data collection, entry, cleaning, analysis, and interpretation for antimicrobial stewardship projects, including a point prevalence study on antimicrobial use and appropriateness
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on antimicrobial stewardship to local, state, and national partners

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with at least a bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Science and experience equivalent to two years of full-time responsible work as a pharmacist or one year residency
  • Licensure or eligible for licensure as a Pharmacist in the State of Tennessee. Licensure as a Pharmacist in the State of Tennessee is required in a reasonable time after employment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects 

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience in implementing antimicrobial stewardship programs, especially in the outpatient setting

• Experience in reviewing medical records/reviewing appropriateness of antimicrobials

Training and/or experience and or/certification as an infectious disease pharmacist (e.g., SIDP, MadID)
