Clinical Pharmacist: Inpatient Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial Stewardship

Position Summary:

  • Within Maine Medical Center’s antimicrobial stewardship program, this clinical pharmacist will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to provide infectious diseases clinical pharmacotherapy support for patients on the Infectious Diseases consult service. Additionally, this pharmacist will participate in antimicrobial stewardship activities to optimize the use of antimicrobials at Maine Medical Center. Under the direction of the MaineHealth Antimicrobial Stewardship Program director, this pharmacist will rotate between the ID consult service and stewardship activities with one other adult inpatient ID clinical pharmacist. 

    Some core functions include:

  • Performing daily core antimicrobial stewardship activities (e.g. reviewing positive blood culture report, review and approval of restricted antimicrobials)
  • Daily rounding on the inpatient infectious diseases consult service (alternating with the other adult inpatient ID pharmacist)
  • Participate in the review of antimicrobial agents for consideration of formulary addition/removal
  • Collaboration with physicians, infection prevention, clinical microbiology, and other professionals to carry out optimal antimicrobial stewardship practices
  • Development, or review of existing, clinical pathways and protocols involving the use of antimicrobials
  • Serve as preceptor for the PGY1 Pharmacy, PGY2 Infectious Diseases, and other residency programs
  • Provide experiential mentorship for Doctor of Pharmacy students
  • Participation in local and health-system antimicrobial stewardship committees as well as other relevant hospital committees with interdisciplinary collaboration 
  • Participate in the monitoring, tracking, and reporting of antimicrobial utilization at the medical center
  • Provide education across multiple disciplines (e.g. pharmacy, nursing, medicine)
  • Candidate qualifications are as follows:

  • 1.     Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy
  • 2.     Clinical training and experience:
  • a.     Completion of PGY1 Pharmacy residency required
  • b.     Completion of 
  •             i.     PGY-2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy residency preferred, or, 
  •             ii.     Completion of four (4) years of practice experience (i.e., four years of experience after licensure/registration as a pharmacist) including 50% or more of that time in infectious diseases
  • 3.     Licensure/certifications
  • a.     Licensed or eligibility for licensure to practice pharmacy in the State of Maine required
  • b.     Board Certified Infectious Diseases Pharmacist (BCIDP) or Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) with added qualifications in ID preferred

Shift: Full-time weekdays with rotating weekends
