CLINICAL PHARMACIST – INFECTIOUS DISEASES/ANTIMICROBIAL STEWARDSHIP
Applicable Position Description: Clinical Pharmacist – Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial Stewardship
Position Summary: The Antimicrobial Stewardship and Evaluation Team (ASET) are dedicated to enhancing the quality of antimicrobial use throughout Duke University Hospital (DUH). This person will join a team of three antimicrobial stewardship pharmacists and work collaboratively with the Department of Pharmacy, medical staff, and other healthcare workers under the direction of the ASET Pharmacist Coordinator and Medical Director.
Description of Institution: DUH is 979-bed tertiary care, an academic medical center with comprehensive inpatient and ambulatory care services. The Department of Pharmacy provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care with a staff of approximately 400 pharmacists, technicians, administrative and support personnel. The Duke Center for Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Prevention was designated an Infectious Diseases Society of America Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence in 2017. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform the prospective and retrospective antimicrobial review, feedback, and (when indicated) intervention throughout Duke University Hospital (DUH)
- Participate in the development of infectious diseases-related protocols and order sets
- Update DUH infectious disease guidelines to improve antibiotic decision-support for DUH clinicians relating to the selection, dose, duration, and monitoring of antimicrobials
- Collaborate with other members of the ASET interdisciplinary team to establish models and procedures to audit and provide prescriber feedback in order to optimize antimicrobial prescribing practices
- Represent ASET to front-line prescribers and administrative leaders at DUH; actively contribute, and provide leadership in related committees, groups or initiatives relating to antimicrobial stewardship
- Participate in the preparation of reports intended to document the impact of the program on quality, safety, and cost of antimicrobial use
- Assist in organizing, managing, and querying a newly developed DUH ASET antimicrobial utilization database
- Work to ensure optimal compliance with anti-infective related clinical pathways and guidelines (e.g. hospital-acquired pneumonia, CMS guidelines for surgical infection prevention)
- Analyze prescribing and utilization patterns utilizing internal and external databases (i.e. UHC Clinical Resource Manager, Medicare process of care measures) to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
- Design and implement strategies and activities for enhancing performance in antimicrobial medication utilization
- Participate in the review and approval of requests for restricted antibiotic use
- Assist in developing annual quality and financial goals for anti-infective utilization
- Participate in the conduct of didactic and experiential training of present and future physicians and pharmacists in principles of antimicrobial stewardship
- Provide educational lectures and/or participates in research (Duke, State/Local, National)
Required or desired credentials or experience of applicants: Three years of clinical hospital experience and/or completion of a PGY1 residency and PGY2 residency in infectious disease or critical care required. Candidates with experience as a member of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Service are preferred. Licensed as a pharmacist by the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy.
